Introduced in 2001, the .NAME TLD is the sole TLD planned for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to order john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased third-level domain names remained working.
